The Training Diary of a Middle of the Pack, Middle Age Runner Trying to get to the Big Race - Boston

History
I started running in january of 2004 to get in shape. I had gained too much weight and felt terrible. I was able to run my first 5K 3 months later. I have continued to push for greater goals and have run 3 marathons and I am training for a 4th now.

So here I am thinking again. God, I hate it when that happens. What on earth is going on in my life.

I think about the direction I am heading and wonder if it is the direction that I want to go. I am in the middle of a divorce. One that I started. Why? Because I was sick of living with a person who technically was living, but in reality died long ago. Funny thing is that after I started the divorce that same person woke up all of a sudden. Not that it matters, I just don't feel the same way about her anymore.. I don't feel that there will be much of a change in attitude, and if there was, it will not last long.

Since starting my road to being healthy 4 years ago I have been slowly feeling different. These changes came slowly. A little at a time. I felt that these changes were good. I took on a different attitude towards life, living and everything around me. I woke in the morning with a new found love of life. Wanting to experience more and more. What I found was that my life was changing. I was not the same person I was. I started meeting new friends, friends that were positive, energetic and focused. Not like my previous life of solitude, boring, same -old stuff type of life. I guess meeting these new people made the situation at home worse. I spent more an d more time away from the old homestead and more time at events and races. I looked forward to these days. I looked less forward to going to the house. Doing nothing. Depression all around me.

I don't know how things will turn out after the divorce. In some ways I am terrified of the idea. I never was a bachelor. I left home went directly into the military then directly into marriage. I don't have a problem with being alone - I kinda enjoy being by myself. It's peaceful. I get a lot done without others around. It will give me a lot of time to train next year. I want to meet other women that will enjoy the same activities that I do. I don't expect them to train with me everyday - or go to every race. but I would like them to jump in and train a little and at least enjoy themselves at races - even if they don't race themselves. I'm not a fancy guy, I like long nights at home on the couch, home cooked meals, rock concerts, sports, neatness, and a great sense of humor. Someone that works out and is proud of their body, and puts the time into it to keep it that way. If I can find someone like that - great. Until then I will just keep training - taking pride in my own body. Trying to make it the best that I can. Using what God gave me and keeping it in tip tip condition.

Life is change in motion - there are more changes ahead - I know and I'm good with that. But that will not keep me from pursuing my dreams. CIAO

Well, I survived. Better than I though actually. The 2005 boulder Backroads Marathon took place yesterday. Weather could not have been better. The temperature at the start was about 52 degrees, it was cloudy, foggy, and a little drizzle was in the air. About 650 marathoners stood at the start line waiting for the gun to go off. Bagpiper lead the march to the start line and then played the National Anthem. I was more nervous about this race than I was about the last. Why, well this time I knew what it would feel like. I was also a little worried that my training did not prepare me well enough. After the start I settled quickly into my pace, although trying to maintain a 10 minute pace or less, I did not want to push so hard as to have to walk in the end. By mile 22 - hey I was still running although not as fast as I would like. My pace dropped to about an 11 minute mile. I was happy to still be running though. I did feel little cramps in my upper legs but nothing like the last Marathon. At mile 25, with the finish line in site, the cramps came like a wave from the thigh to the calf of both legs. I stopped, tried to stretch, walked and then started running again. Not bad up to about 50ft from the end then POW, cramp city again. I did eventually get going again and jogged through the finish line.
I think my training and my body is getting better. I lasted longer in this race than the first. Although finishing slower by 3 minutes - this race was more difficult in terrain. Lot's of hills. I am curious how Las Vegas will be in December. It is more of a flat course. But I only have 8 weeks to train. That makes for a quick schedule. I will continue to blog my progress.

Well here I go again, on Sunday I will be running the 2005 Boulder Backroads Marathon. I have been training now for about 15 weeks. I feel confident that this one will go well. Even though I did not do well with my long 20 mile run I do feel that this run will go well. The weather is predicted to be perfect for running, highs in the mid-60's and cloudy. I have started a new training routine that will bring me deeper into my training that I have ever been. More emphasis will be placed on nutrition, cross training, stretching and longer runs. So after this marathon - I will be blogging on how this new program prepares me for the Las Vegas and next year the Salt Lake Marathons.

Well the weather has not changed much, still very hot out here in Colorado. Running is tough, training is lagging some due to the heat. This morning Amy and I put on 14 miles. Although we started our run at 6:30 am while it was a relatively cool 76 degrees --- by the time we hit mile 8 the temperature rose to 86 degrees. Dehydration seems to be the biggest problem. I carry 28 oz of replacement fluid on a "Fuel Belt". During the 14 miles this morning I used more fluid during the last 4 miles than I did during the first part of the run. Also having to stop at the stream that flows past the route we picked to wet down my shirt. I really start to slow down and work harder when my body temp increases with the weather. Probably slowing down at least 30 seconds per mile. It's no suprise why Summer is a hard season to be training for a marathon. Also last week, Amy, Larry, and I signed up for the Las Vegas Marathon to be held on Dec 4th. Should be a heck of a Marathon. Now if I can just train enough now to be ready for it and for the Boulder Backroad marathon held in September. If the weather does not cool off soon I'll never get my long mileage done. Don't ask me how the Road Runner stayed ahead of the Coyote for so long in the desert, without air conditioning!

Hot! That is the only word that describes running lately. Temperatures during the day have been record setting at 106 degrees. Even getting up early and running by 7am seems to be intolerable. Running lately has been work. I have been feeling weak, heavy, dead legged. Why? I have been asking the same question. How do you find out the cause. That is why runners should keep a training dairy. Let me explain.
A training diary or runner's log is a record of each run - information should include diet, mileage, pace, weather and generally how you are feeling. When your running changes, you don't feel right, the place to look is your training diary. What has changed? What is different? After looking at the past you can usually find an answer to your problem. Mine? Well nothing has changed except the weather. Increasing heat and humidity and sweating without proper replacement can cause mild dehydration. Dehydration can be the cause of lack of energy and fatigue.
The answer will be drinking more and rehydrating myself. Lately my runs have been pushing hard and sweating even harder. I don't feel that I have been drinking enough to keep up with my sweating. So I guess I'll start hitting the bottle. Of water of course. Let's hope the heat let's up soon before we all start saying " Help ME, I'm Melting"

Well now I know what is is like to take a run in water. It wasw so hot this morning I felt like my body was under water. Even though I was able to complete 12 miles. Have been slacking on my blog and running lately, but with this heat it is hard to get motivated to do anything.
The news around our area is the fire - Mason Gulch. 12,000 acres burned in 6 days. Now I don't want to be called a realist but, does it seem particularly odd to anyone why there are people that are against cleaning our forests. Not that the so called "Tree Huggers" are bad but if the Forest Service was allowed to mitigate the forests then fires like this would not happen. Even allowing selective tree cutting would be helpful. but instead when these fires start - they get out of control so quickly that there is no chance of stopping it. Just my opinion.
Back to running - it is so much simpler. Training has taken a back seat to the heat but this week it starts up again. At the end of this month is the Colorado Springs Grand Prix - a flat, fast 6 mile race. this will be just a training race this year, next will be the Georgetown-Idaho Springs 1/2 Marathon. Traing schedules should be built on a gently increasing mileage. Increasing mileage about 10-15% per week until about 3 weeks prior to the Marathon. many marathoners try to get at least 2-3 20 mile runs in before the marathon. PRior to my last marathon I only did one. This time I have 2 scheduled. The body needs to become accustomed to the 3-4 hour pounding. Otherwise you just can't get past 18 miles. You "hit the wall" Scheduled should be at least 12-14 weeks depending on your aerobic level. So training is a long process. The reason most people so not stay running is because they tend to increase thier mileage too quickly, which usually causes an injury of some sort. More on training later.
Well my time is up here. I'll get into more detail later on the training schedule.

Another beautiful day in Colorado. Even with clouds in the sky it was quite warm today. Down in town temperatures rose to around 94 degrees. Usually up where I live in the mountains the temps run about 10 degrees less than in town. This is my vacation week. I feel a little lost. My last vacation that I spent at home was about a year and a half ago. So I am getting a lot done at home with chores that have needed finished a long time ago. You never know how much needs done until you have time to think about them all. Whew!
Have you been following the Tour De France? If not you should be. The Tour is not just a bike race but this year is history being made. American cyclist are taking control of the event. After four stages there are 5 Americans in the top 20. WOW. Today Lance Armstrong, with the help of his team - is back in the the Yellow Jersey. If he continues to dominate as he has been, he will win his 7th and final Tour. Then he retires.
If we can dominate cycling, why can't we dominate running. Americans can succeed at anything that they put their heart in. But running has not seen any dominance for a long time. Major races including Boston and New York have been won by Kenyans and Ethiopians. Why? Maybe it is that running has not been as glorious as other sports. You don't see races covered on national TV every weekend. And you don't see Marathoners advertising sneakers and cereal on TV. Marathoners are a special breed of athlete, usually training on our own. Quietly running early in the morning or late at night. It is a quiet sport. A time of reflection. A time of meditation. Maybe one day running will once again become mainstream and America can take over the sport again.
